How Much Can Technology Be Trusted?
20-Dec-2018 14:10
Since the industrial revolution, technology has changed society continually. Largely due to innovations in semiconductor electronics, software and computer technology, the pace of technological development has continued to accelerate over the past 50 years.
Personal computers now fit into your pocket. You have access to people and information all over the world through the Internet. Anything up to the size of a small building can be printed. Just about everything -- from your house to your car -- is becoming intelligent.
Unfortunately, much like the news itself, by the time people grow concerned about the possible negative applications or misuse of the technology, that misuse already is possible.
1. Innovation Begets Innovation: Innovation itself is a catalyst for future innovation. As a result, an innovation by one person or organization enables and encourages innovations by others. Consider that initial innovation in 3D printing, using plastics, enabled innovation in printing using a wide variety of materials, ranging from ceramics to metals and glass. Likewise, 3D printing spawned innovations in printing cars, buildings and, yes, even guns.
2. Regulator Ignorance: Yet today, technology impacts just about every aspect of our lives. Technology is also a key driver in economic growth and the generation of wealth. Technology companies are driving advances in global stock markets, and the technology they develop is powering the markets and the investors in those markets. So, despite some of the negative ramifications of technology, the world generally benefits from continued advances.
Society wants to believe that technology will be used for the common good. However, technology can and will continue to be used for any and all possible applications. The trust really should be in the belief that people and society will use technology in a positive manner -- not for malicious purposes. Further, people should not fear the pace of technology, but accept that the future still holds enormous possibilities.

Google Chrome to start punishing websites showing 'abusive ads'
06-Nov-2018 13:05
Websites showing ‘abusive advertisements’ will soon face the wrath of Google Chrome as it will be blacklisting them for it. The company will be punishing the websites that are repeat offenders as apart of Chrome browser version 71 that is due to arrive in December this year. The search giant will be punishing websites with ‘abusive advertisements’ by not blocking them but by hiding all the ads.
By ‘abusive’ advertisements Google means that kind of ads on websites that show up in the form of system error messages, fake close boxes clicking on which start and advertisement, phishing and malware elements. All-in-all Google will block ads that are misleading or harm your device in some way or the other. The firm has also given a list of ads that it will declare as ‘abusive’:
Fake Messages: Ads or other elements that resemble chat apps, warnings, system dialogs, or other notifications that lead to an ad or landing page when clicked.
Unexpected Click Areas: Transparent backgrounds, non-visible page elements, or other typically non-clickable areas that lead to an ad or landing page when clicked.
Misleading Site Behavior: Page features such as scroll bars, play buttons, “next” arrows, close buttons, or navigation links that lead to an ad or landing page when clicked.
Phishing: Ads or page elements that attempt to steal personal information or trick your users into sharing personal information.
Auto Redirect: Ads or page elements that auto-redirect the page without user action.
Mouse Pointer: Ads or page elements that resemble a moving or clicking mouse pointer that attempt to trick a user into interacting with it.
Malware or Unwanted Software: Ads or page elements that promote, host, or link to malware or unwanted software that may be installed on your users’ machines.
For now, Google Chrome has a certain level for security for such elements on websites. Several times you may observe the browser blocking pop-ups or limiting auto-play of videos. But with Chrome 71, these measures are about to get stricter and more robust.

Internet search giant Google has rolled out a new feature for its Maps app, which will be quite a boon among those who love eating out with friends. 3. Long Press on any location
4. Drop the link in a small floating bubble, which appears on the lower right side of the screen
After shortlisting all the places, share them on any social messaging platform such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger or Google Hangouts
This shared link will show the locations of all the restaurants you have selected and once all your friends have the shortlisted restaurants, they can then vote for them in the form of likes and dislikes to express their preference. Each member of the group also has the option to add and delete places, as per their choice. The shared link redirects all the group members to the Google Maps app, however, if a group member doesn't have the app they can also view it on the web.
Google to begin charging smartphone makers for its Apps
17-Oct-2018 12:35
Alphabet Inc's Google on Tuesday revamped how it distributes its mobile apps in the European Union, introducing a licensing fee for device makers to access its app marketplace in a response to regulators' findings that it had broken antitrust law.
The new arrangement opens doors for Google's web search and browser rivals such as Microsoft Corp but essentially leaves the U.S. tech giant's lucrative mobile business intact, analysts said.
The European Commission in July fined Google a record 4.34 billion euro ($5 billion) for using the market dominance of its mobile software to hinder rivals in areas such as internet search.
"We'll be working closely with our Android partners in the coming weeks and months to transition to the new agreements," Hiroshi Lockheimer, Google senior vice president, said in a blog post.
How to delete your WhatsApp data from Google Drive
23-Aug-2018 20:00
Google has recently been facing the heat for tracking users' location even when they have turned off the the location. Amid all that, the issue of users' data privacy has again caught people's attention as it affects some two billion users of devices that run Google's Android operating software and hundreds of millions of worldwide iPhone users who rely on Google for Maps or search.
All your chats -- that also include heavy multimedia files as well -- will no longer occupy space in your Google Drive. This means that all your chats messages, photos, and videos on WhatsApp will be synced with your Google Drive using a Google account but will be stored without using up the limited 15GB of Google Drive space that you get.
But given that there is always a risk of privacy infringement and data theft, your data is never completely safe if it's stored in Cloud. Follow these steps if you want to remove WhatsApp data from your Google Drive:
1. Go to Google Drive website (https://drive.google.com) on your desktop and log in to your Google account
2. If you are accessing this URL via your smartphone, tap on the top left corner and select the "Desktop Version"
3. Click the Gear icon in the top right corner

How to send WhatsApp messages to people not in your contact list
29-May-2018 16:45
most everyone who uses a smartphone knows what purpose WhatsApp serves. The instant messaging platform has a basic function of sending a message to your contacts. However, having a number saved in your contacts is not a compulsion.
WhatsApp comes with a 'Click to Chat' feature that allows users to begin a chat with someone without having their phone number saved in your phone's address book. However, knowing the number of the person you want to chat with is a must.
WhatsApp lets you create a link that will allow the user to start a chat with them.
To create the link, use https://api.whatsapp.com/send?phone= and insert the person's full phone number in international format, after eliminating any zeroes, brackets or dashes. For example:
Use: https://api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=15551234567
Don't use: https://api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=+001-(555)1234567
By clicking the link, a chat with the person automatically opens. This 'Click to Chat' works on both phone and WhatsApp Web. Readers must note that this functionality works only in individual chat cases and does not work in case you want to engage in a Group chat.
Recently, WhatsApp added new features and updates for the WhatsApp groups. The popular messenger app has introduced five new improvements to WhatsApp groups which include group description, admin controls, group catch up, participant search and admin permissions.
The WhatsApp users will now have the ability to leave a group permanently. This means that the users will get away with the hassle of being repeatedly added to a group they have left.
Microsoft on track for strongest growth: Here's what is getting maximum revenue for
27-Apr-2018 19:20
Microsoft Corp has topped Wall Street forecasts for quarterly profit as the technology company signed up more businesses to its Azure cloud computing services and Office 365 productivity suite.
Much of Microsoft's recent growth has been fueled by its cloud computing business as more enterprises seek to cut data storage costs by adopting cloud-based software and moving their applications to data centers.
The company's flagship cloud product Azure, which competes with Amazon.com Inc's dominant cloud infrastructure offering Amazon Web Services (AWS), recorded revenue growth of 93 percent in the third quarter ended March 31.
"Microsoft on the heels of Azure is gaining further steam in this massive secular cloud shift, and the results speak to that," said Daniel Ives at research firm GBH Insights.
All new Gmail: Google redesigns G Suite to steal biz away from Microsoft
26-Apr-2018 14:15
Alphabet Inc’s Google unveiled on Wednesday its first Gmail redesign since 2013, capping what the company says was an expensive overhaul two years in the making to adopt security and offline functionality and better resemble Microsoft Outlook.
It is Google’s most extensive update to software in its G Suite workplace bundle since accelerating efforts to steal business from Microsoft Corp’s dominant Office workplace software suite. Previously, G Suite added instant-messaging and spreadsheet features.
With Gmail, Google said it restructured email storage databases, unified three dueling systems for syncing messages across devices and upgraded computers underpinning the service. That shift to Google’s self-developed Tensor processing chips enables smart-assistant features such as “suggested replies” to messages and “nudges” to respond to forgotten emails.
Reliance Jio's next big bet: Laptops with a SIM card
24-Apr-2018 14:00
A laptop with a SIM card -- after smartphones and the 4G feature phone -- could be the next big bet for Reliance Jio in its bid to increase its average revenue per user (ARPU).
The Mukesh Ambani-led Jio has held talks with US chip major Qualcomm to bring out laptops running the Windows 10 operating system with built-in cellular connections for the Indian market. Qualcomm is already closely working with Jio and Reliance Retail for the 4G feature phone.
“…we have talked to Jio. They could take the device and bundle it with data and content,” Miguel Nunes, senior director, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, told ET.
The chipmaker is also talking to home-bred Internet of Things (IoT) brand Smartron to bring the Snapdragon 835-powered laptops with cellular connectivity. Smartron confirmed the talks.
Globally, Qualcomm is already working with players such as HP, Asus and Lenovo for the so-called “Always Connected PCs”. Besides, Nunes said that there are now 14 operators that have extended their support for this new category, including the US’ Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and major carriers in Germany, Italy, the UK, France, and Australia.
How to stop WhatsApp from sharing your data with Facebook
20-Apr-2018 21:35
With the whole controversy around Facebook-Cambridge Analytica data leak still brewing, there is a growing awareness about how much and what kind of data is being shared online. Recently, Facebook-owned WhatsApp was too under the scanner for allegedly sharing information with its parent company. WhatsApp responded to this by saying that it collects "very little data" of its users and "every message is end-to-end encrypted."
But there is a way for users to choose not to share their account information with Facebook.
Option 1:
As soon as you download WhatsApp, you will be asked to 'Agree' to accept their updated Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. But before you do, tap Agree and then tap on 'read more.' Once you do that, you will find a control at the bottom of the screen, which you can uncheck if you do not want your account information shared with Facebook.
Option 2:
This option comes in the picture if you have already agreed to WhatsApp's terms and policies but now want to change that.
But this works only for 30 days. Do this by going to Settings > Account > Share my account info in the app. If you do not want your account information shared with Facebook to improve your Facebook ads and products experiences, you can uncheck the box or toggle the control.
Readers must note that WhatsApp states in its blog that they still share your information with Facebook.
WhatsApp is changing its 'delete for all' feature again
16-Apr-2018 14:35
Facebook-owned WhatsApp has recently rolled out various new features in order to enhance the user experience. The company has now started rolling out a new feature which will enable the users to again download the deleted media files.
According to WABetaInfo, a Twitter account that tracks changes in WhatsApp’s beta builds, the company has introduced a feature for Android that will enable the users to again download the media file which was accidentally deleted.
The popular instant messenger is now keeping the deleted files on servers which means that the users can again download them if they want. Earlier, WhatsApp used to delete the files from its servers which were deleted by the users. The undownloaded media was deleted after the period of 30 days, while the downloaded media was deleted immediately after the download.
“Recently, WhatsApp has modified this behavior: when a media is successfully downloaded, WhatsApp doesn’t delete it from the server, allowing the users to download it again if the file was accidentally deleted in the path where WhatsApp saves media”, said WABetaInfo.
Google Maps spotted testing a new search bar, here's how it looks
21-Mar-2018 19:50
Those who have been following the app industry must be aware that Google keeps testing new features and brings some major/minor, cosmetic changes in its apps. This time, the company’s Maps app is found to be testing a new search bar. This new change spotted by 9to5Google is nothing major though but still has several minor tweaks.
The new search bar is found in Google Maps stable version 9.73.3 on Pixel 2 XL. Unlike what is seen in other Google apps such as Play Music, Google Play and others, this new bar is more rounded from the corners has ‘Google Maps’ logo placed in between instead on one side. There are also some variances noticed in the box’s text. Some see “Where to?” while others see “Search here” written inside the search bar.
Google seems to be putting a lot of emphasis on its search bar across web, apps and other services. Recently, the company’s video sharing platform, YouTube, was also found testing a new full-width search bar UI on Android. However, the design still has the rectangular look. Besides the look, nothing else is changed on how the new bar functions. Surprisingly, the full-width search bar removes YouTube branding from the main screen.

Google's 'biggest problem' got worse in 2017
09-Mar-2018 23:45
Two hundred days can be considered a long enough time, especially in the world of technology. That’s how long back Google’s Android Oreo was officially launched. Yet, only a handful of flagship smartphones have got the Android Oreo update. It becomes more alarming for Google as just yesterday it previewed its next OS update, Android P.
According to a graph published by Android Intelligence, apart from Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones, most other top brands are lagging behind Android Oreo update, at least in the US. Samsung had recently started updating Oreo on its last year’s flagship devices, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. The company, however, stopped the update abruptly but has now resumed. Still, a large chunk of Samsung Galaxy S8 owners are still far away from getting Android Oreo.
The same goes for LG. The two flagship devices – LG G6 and LG V30 – are scheduled to get Android Oreo soon but it hasn’t arrived. HTC and Motorola have received Android Oreo update but just for their flagship devices. Rest of the devices haven’t yet got Android Oreo.
Not getting the current OS on a flagship device is a problem that has plagued Android smartphones for long. Google, on its part, had extended Project Treble support to make updating of OS easier for smartphone makers. With Project Treble, smartphone manufacturers don’t need to change the customer UI to roll out an Android update. However, Project Treble is supported on latest devices that run Android Oreo.
Meanwhile, Google has already given a developer preview of Android P. Several interesting changes are in the pipeline but none bigger than ‘display cutout support’. In other words, there’s a provision for an iPhone X-like notch on Android. What’s more is that messaging notifications have been improved. Android P is expected to bring new messaging style notifications. One can see images in message notifications and the avatar of the person sending it instead of just the name. Smart Reply will also be there in message notifications among others.
WhatsApp for Android gets group video calling feature
07-Feb-2018 22:45
WhatsApp is known to be testing new features often in different parts of the world and on different platforms. The Facebook-owned instant messenger introduced voice calling facility years ago, followed by one-to-one video calling. Now, what looks imminent is a new feature that will let more than two people perform a video call, or in other words - Group video calling.
The feature was first spotted by WABeta Info, a website that keeps track of new features in WhatsApp. Hints of group video calling in WhatsApp dropped in the version 2.17.443 on Android last month. But nothing much was unearthed about the particular functionality. Now, the website seems to have dug deeper in the app's new version on Android - 2.18.39. Unfortunately, this is not an official rollout but is visible only to beta users.
It has been mentioned that the new app version includes a new option to add participants to a group call. In the screenshot posted by the news website on its Twitter account, one can see the option to add more members in a video call on the top right corner. It is worth adding that the feature currently supports calling up to three more members. This is in addition to you and the other participants. So in total, at most five users can be on a single video call at a tim
We are not yet sure when WhatsApp plans to pan this feature out to non-beta users. However, since it has shown up in beta testing, it increases the chance to reach the non-beta users as well in future.
Google is launching a new initiative to make internet safe for you
05-Feb-2018 21:35
To create awareness around Internet safety, Google India on Monday launched a public initiative "#SecurityCheckKiya" to protect young and first-time web users from account hijacking, safeguard Android devices from malicious apps and secure all their personal data if they lose their device.
With a large base of unsuspecting first time Internet users now coming online through easy access modes but lacking technical literacy, Indian users are increasingly vulnerable to bad actors and abuse on the web, the company said in a statement.
"Just like in the physical world, users in India should take precautions while engaging with the online world. While security is built into all of Google services, keeping the web safe for everyone is a shared responsibility," said Sunita Mohanty, Director, Trust and Safety.
Google will make this information available on its homepage www.google.co.in , encouraging users to take the first step of Security Check on Safer Internet Day which will be celebrated on February 6.

Facebook starts showing Aadhaar prompts to new users
11-Jan-2018 21:00
Facebook India has confirmed it has started prompting users to provide their Aadhaar details if they want to create a new account. The social media giant was spotted asking Aadhaar details from a user, who then posted a screenshot of it on Reddit. In the screenshot Facebook is seen asking the user his/her first and last name, which should be same as the one on the user's Aadhaar card.
Mark Zuckerberg and co. says the firm has started asking these details to limited users as a part of a small test. Not all the users will see such a prompt while creating a new account. Also mentioned is that although the prompt asks for users to feed their named based on the Aadhaar card, it is not necessary for them to do so.
"We want to make sure people can use the names they're known by on Facebook, and can easily connect with friends and family. This is a small test where we provide additional language when people sign up for an account to say that using the name on their Aadhaar card makes it easier for friends to recognize them. This is an optional prompt which we are testing, people are not required to enter the name on their Aadhaar card," said Facebook spokesperson to GadgetsNow in an emailed statement.
It is worth adding that Facebook for now is only asking for the users' first and last name. It is not asking for any other Aadhaar details, eliminating privacy concerns. It is yet to be seen how Facebook plans to go ahead with this move.
Indian Railways to equip all 8,500 stations with Wi-Fi
08-Jan-2018 13:40
All railway stations -- nearly 8,500 across the country, including those in rural and remote areas -- will be equipped with Wi-Fi facilities at an estimated cost of Rs 700 crore ($110 million).
As part of the government's ambitious Digital India initiative, the national transporter has currently commissioned Wi-Fi services at 216 major stations enabling about seven million rail passengers to log on to the free Internet facility.
"Internet access has now become an important requirement in day-to-day working and we shall be providing this facility at all railway stations in the country," a senior Railway Ministry official said.
As per the plan finalised at a recent meeting, while 1,200 stations have been identified for this facility to primarily cater to rail passengers, about 7,300 stations have been earmarked to not only serve passengers but also local people in rural and remote areas.
The Wi-FI facility at these stations in rural and remote areas will be offered to the local population as part of the digital makeover of rural India to promote e-governance.
Railway stations in rural areas will have kiosks with Wi-FI that will become digital hot spots offering services like digital banking, Aadhaar generation, issuing government certificates, including birth and death certificates, and filing taxes and paying bills, among others.
